President Dwight D. Eisenhower of the United States of America visited this country at the invitation of our President on June 18, 1960. He was the first U.S. President in American history to come to China during his incumbency. His visit greatly strengthened the traditional friendship between the Republic of China and the United States and also gave assurance to the consolidation of the Free World. In order to extend a hearty welcome by our government and people to the distinguished visitor, a set of 〝U.S. President Eisenhower's State Visit to China〞commemorative stamps was issued on this occasion. The stamps were originally of our 〝Defence of Kinmen and Matsu〞 issue overprinted with ten Chinese characters〝美國總統蒞華訪問紀念〞, meaning 〝In Commemoration of U.S. President's State Visit to China〞, arranged in two lines and 〝Welcome U.S.President Dwight D. Eisenhower〞 in English in four lines. The overprints were done by the China Engraving and Printing Works.
