This set of stamps takes the portraits of Hsuan Chuang and Chu Hsi as central design. 1.00 Hsuan Chuang (602-664) started his pilgrimage in 628 to India by Central Asia and returned in 645, being received with public honors by the Emperor Tai Tsung. He brought back 657 Buddhist books besides numerous images, pictures, and 150 relics. The rapid and wide spread of Buddhism in China was largely due to his work. 4.00 Chu Hsi (1130-1200) established NeoConfucian orthodoxy by unifying and synthesizing the numerous, variant schools of Confucian thought of his day. Because of the comprehensiveness and persuasive power of his views, Chu Hsi's scholarship and philosophical speculations have been held in great esteem in China from dynasty to dynasty, even to the present. The design was based on painting in the collection of the Palace Museum. The original painting measures 34.6 × 42.6 cm.
