Hsiung Cheng-chi (1887-1910) was a native of Chiang Tu, Kiangsu Province. He studied military science at Anhwei Military Academy. After graduation he served as an artillery officer in the Anhwei New Force. He joined Ni Ying-tien and other revolutionaries in The Cavalry and Artillery Battalions to plan an uprising. They wanted to occupy An-chin to set up a military base for revolution. In October 1908, they launched uprisings at An`chin while an autumn maneuver was held at Taihu. Though Hsiung and his compatriots fought bravely, the united military action was defeated by the Ching Army. After the unsuccessful revolt in Anhwei, Hsiung went to northeastern China intending to assassinate the minister of Navy, Tai Hsun; unfortunately, the plan failed and martyr Hsiung was captured and died for the cause of the Revolution at the age of twenty-four.
