To let our citizens understand the magnificence of the mountains of Taiwan and raise the quality of their mountain recreational activities, this Directorate has chosen Mount Jade, Mount Hsueh, Mount Nanhu and Mount Chilai for a series of stamp sets on "Taiwan Mountains." These four sets of stamps will each consist of four stamps. The first set--Mount Jade--features the Main Peak, Western Peak, Northern Peak and Eastern Peak of Mount Jade.
Taiwan is an island surrounded by the ocean on four sides, with high mountains running from the northern corner to the southern tip of the island. The island has more than a hundred peaks with an elevation of over 3,000 meters. Most of these are part of the Central Range, the Mount Hsueh Range or the Mount Jade Range. These mountain ranges, which present one towering ridge after another, are known collectively as "the green great wall." The Mount Jade Range is situated in the center of Taiwan, and all of its peaks have an elevation of over 3,000 meters. Very few people live in this region, so the area's virgin forest, wildlife and plants are well preserved. There are, therefore, ample eco resources here. The main peak of Mount Jade is about 3,952 meters tall, the tallest in Eastern Asia. It combines with the eastern, southern, western and northern peaks to form the magnificent Mount Jade Range. On top of the northern peak, there is a weather station belonging to the Central Weather Bureau, which is the highest building in Taiwan.
