To increase opportunities for person-to-person diplomacy and to encourage philately, the ROC Directorate General of Posts hosted the Asian International Invitational Stamp Exhibition in 1993 and the tenth Asian International Stamp Exhibition in 1996. The TAIPEI 2005 - 18th Asian International Stamp Exhibition is the first large international stamp show since the Directorate was corporatized to become Chunghwa Post. The exhibition is going to be held on August 19-24, 2005 at the Taipei World Trade Center .
To publicize and celebrate this occasion, Chunghwa Post is issuing a series of eight separate souvenir sheets. The first one was released on August 27, 2004 ; the second will be released on April 19, 2005 ; and the remaining six will be released during the exhibition.
The design of the second souvenir sheet—“Taiwan Culture”—follows:
In the center are various intricate wooden structures found in temples of Taiwan : the wood carving “Mandarin Ducks Playing in a Lotus Pond” on a door panel of Penghu ’s Mazu temple, the caisson ceiling of Lugang’s Longshan temple, and the lion cap blocks of the town’s Mazu temple. Among the three, the Longshan temple’s caisson ceiling was chosen to be the theme of a stamp. The upper left side features a stamp based on Taiwanese hand puppets, provided by I Wan Jan Puppet Theater, dressed in wedding attire. In the background of this stamp are red paper lanterns, a representative traditional handicraft of Taiwan . These two art forms demonstrate the beauty and uniqueness of our folk handicraft, traditional wedding customs and opera art. The bright red of the lanterns lends power to the image. The lower right side features the ceramic swallowtails of Tainan ’s Singjigong Temple , making the design livelier by shattering the unity of the image of the souvenir sheet.
