In February 1934 as Chairman of the Military Council of the National Government, Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek was in Nanchang on a bandit suppression mission. While there he advocated the New Life Movement based on propriety, righteousness, unselfishness, and a sense of shame. It also emphasized orderliness, cleanliness, simplicity, plainness, promptness, and correctness in daily conduct. To promote this reform and national salvation movement, which had won the support of the people throughout the whole country, the Postal Administration issued a set of commemorative stamps in four denominations as follows: 2¢and 5¢ The central design is the New Life Movement emblem in the form of a shield with a compass in the center. In the circles in the four corners are the characters〝禮〞(propriety),〝義〞(righteousness),〝廉〞(unselfishness) and 〝恥〞(sense of shame). 20¢ The New Movement emblem is in the center encircled by the characters 〝禮義廉恥〞written in Seal style. $1 The central design is a lighthouse on which are written vertically the characters 〝禮義廉恥〞with the New Life Movement emblem below.
